Process Addiction Treatments

Research has shown that addiction can extend past substance abuse, leading to what is known as process addictions or compulsive behaviours. The definition of a process addiction refers to any compulsive behavior involving behaviour that in and of itself is not physically addictive, such as shopping or sex, but that the user can develop a type of obsession with. The similarities between these types of addictions are clear, and the treatment options are also quite similar. The medical and mental health community recognizes process addictions as a psychological condition, which requires specified treatment and social support. This type of addiction has largely been ignored as a whole in broader society, but can be just as harmful, if not more so, than substance abuse to factors such as family structure, financial stress and mental wellbeing. Many process addictions are hidden from family and loved ones by the user, and can be much harder to spot than typical addiction issues such as substance abuse. Despite the lack of red flags, process addictions are just as dangerous and can lead to mental health issues, instability and other issues such as suicide and self-harm. The expert team at Trafalgar Residence focuses on rewiring your approach to process addictions, treating you with the same concern and urgent care as a person addicted to drugs or alcohol. We know the battle you and your family have endured, and we’re here to help formulate a treatment plan that works for you specifically, to get you back on the road to recovery.

At Trafalgar Residence, we provide a variety of treatment for a wide range of process addictions such as gambling, Internet, videogames and sex.

Gambling addiction is an all-encompassing addiction that leads to an uncontrollable urge to gamble and continue gambling despite the toll it takes on your life and your financial wellbeing. It means being willing to risk everything that matters in your life in the hopes of getting that unattainable goal. Gambling stimulates the brain’s reward system just like with drugs and alcohol, which can lead to addiction.

Internet addiction is a disorder related to impulse control, and is similar to gambling addiction in the sense that it doesn’t involve the use of substances. Users may develop an emotional attachment to friends they meet online and activities they create on their computers through games or websites.

Videogame addiction is more similar to drug addiction, in the sense that gamers often try to escape problems by playing deeply engrossing videogames. Videogames offer an attractive escape to people, most often teenage boys, who find it intoxicating to become fully immersed in a virtual world that is completely under their control.

Sex addiction is an addictive pattern of unmanageable sexual behaviour that leads to serious difficulties in one’s life. These rampant sexual acts become problematic when occurring repeatedly and begin to interfere with one’s life, and leave the afflicted avoiding realty or real relationships by becoming wholly engulfed in an addictive sexual fantasy.
