Abuse

Abuse is any behaviour or action that is used to harm, scare, control, threaten or intimidate another person. It is a misuse of power and it can come in different forms; physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, sexual, or financial, but it is not limited to any one of these. Any misuse, manipulation, or exploitation of power for the purpose of controlling the behaviours, actions, thoughts, or feelings of another person is abuse.

A victim who has experienced a severely traumatic event in life, be it domestic violence, childhood sexual or physical abuse or neglect, or any significantly disturbing exposure, may have the capacity to compartmentalize the emotional fallout from it, for a while anyway. The psychological impact of these occurrences will vary. Each victim of such traumas, based on personal factors like the stability of their childhoods and families, their support network, or whether or not they are employed, for example, will exhibit a different affective response. With regards to child abuse, the specific type is related to the form of subsequent psychological distress or disorder resulting in adulthood.
